Our MA Hoisting License Equipment Chart illustrates the various equipment types that are covered under each license grade.

To apply for a Mass Hoisting License, you must submit an application to the Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Inspections (OPSI). Or, we can handle this process for you with our electronic MA hoisting license application submission service.

Once your application is received by the state, they will process your paperwork and schedule you for an upcoming exam. The processing time can vary, but you can typically expect your exam date to be anywhere between 1-3 months after your application was received.

Approximately two weeks before your exam date, you'll receive a notice in the mail with your exam details, including date, location, and what to bring. This notice is sent to the address provided on your application.

You must achieve a score of 70% or better in order to obtain the associated MA hoisting engineer license. Scores are posted online, usually within 48 hours of the exam. If you score below 70%, you must wait 60 days before you can retake the same exam.

At Leisure's user-friendly system makes renewing your license quick and easy. Select our electronic MA hoisting license application submission option when purchasing your course(s) and we'll submit your paperwork to the state on your behalf for a $5 service fee.

If you've applied for a Mass hoisting license and are curious about your application status, there are a few steps you can take to gain some insight on where your application stands:

  • Search for your name on the Office of Public Safety and Inspections License Verification Site. If your name appears with the designation "Pending," it means your application has been received by the OPSI and you should expect to receive information about your upcoming exam date soon. The processing time can range anywhere from 1-3 months.
  • Check with your bank to see if your application check has been cashed by the OPSI. If so, they have received your application and are processing the paperwork.
  • As a last resort, contact the OPSI at 617-727-3200 to inquire about your status. Before calling, please keep in mind that the application process can take anywhere from 1-3 months from initial application to sitting for the exam.

All MA hoisting license applicants are required to have a valid DOT medical card.

At Leisure customers can enjoy discounted DOT medical cards for just $85 at select locations across Massachusetts.

To schedule, click on the "My Perks" tab of your dashboard after registering for your exam prep course(s).

FAQs:

Per M.G.L. c. 146, § 57, individuals receiving a failing score may not retake an examination for a license to operate hoisting machinery within 60 days of the previous examination.

There are over a dozen grades, or restrictions, of a MA hoisting license. These are categorized into four classes:

  • Class 1: Hoisting
  • Class 2: Excavating
  • Class 3: Tower/Electric & Air
  • Class 4: Specialty

Within each class, there may be multiple license grades:

  • Class 1: Grades 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D
  • Class 2: Grades 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D
  • Class 3: Grade 3A
  • Class 4: Grades 4B, 4C, 4D, 4E, 4F, 4G

For Classes 1-2, the "A" grades cover the operation of all equipment in that category, while grades "B"-"D" get more restrictive as you go, with the "D" grade covering the least amount of equipment in the category.

Visit our Massachusetts Hoisting License Equipment Chart to see specifically which equipment is covered by each license grade.

You must hold the appropriate license grade(s) for all equipment you will be operating. For example, one individual may hold a 1C, 2A, 4C, and 4D hoisting licenses.

For each Mass. hoisting license grade you'd like to hold, you must pass a state examination. You can add grades to your existing hoisting license at any time by taking the MA hoisting license test for that particular grade.

Yes, you may apply for multiple Mass. hoisting license grades at one time.

It used to be that you would need to submit a separate application and fee for each license grade. Now, you still need to pay the application fee for each grade, but you can submit just one set of paperwork. Simply check the appropriate checkboxes for each license grade you'd like to apply for:

Select all MA hoisting license grades you'd like to apply for

Keep in mind, if you submit an application for multiple license grades, you'll need to take all of those exams on the same day. You'll be provided with a date, time, and location to appear for your hoisting tests, and upon arrival you'll be given a separate exam for each license grade you applied for. If time is on your side and you'd prefer to spread the exams out to allow for dedicated study time, you may want to submit a second application after you take your exam for the first license grade.
