Mass Hoisting Con. Ed. Requirements | At Leisure

Mass hoisting con. ed. requirements are detailed in 520 CMR 6.04, which we've outlined for you below.

State Approval:

Regulations dictate that all hoisting continuing education courses must be approved by the state. "@-Leisure" Contractor Licensing is proud to have been the first state-approved online continuing education provider for Hoisting engineers. Our provider # is HECE-000009, and you can view our certification on our Certificates of Approval page.

Minimum Topics and Hours:

Mass. Hoisting License continuing education requirements state specific topics and hours that must be included in coursework for each class of hoisting license, as follows:

  •  Class 1 (Hoisting) Licenses:
    •  1A, 1B, or 1C: Two (2) hours of regulatory and industry standard training, plus two (2) hours of equipment specific training, for a total of four (4) hours of continuing education
    • 1D: One (1) hour of regulatory and industry standard training, plus one (1) hour of equipment specific training, for a total of two (2) hours of continuing education
  •  Class 2 (Excavation) Licenses:
    • 2A, 2B, 2C, or 2D: Two (2) hours of regulatory and industry standard training, plus two (2) hours of equipment specific training, for a total of four (4) hours of continuing education
  • Class 3 (Electric and Pneumatic) Licenses:
    • 3A,: Two (2) hours of regulatory and industry standard training, plus two (2) hours of equipment specific training, for a total of four (4) hours of continuing education
  • Class 4 (Specialty) Licenses:
    • 4B, 4C, 4D, 4E, 4F, or 4G: One (1) hour of regulatory and industry standard training, plus one (1) hour of equipment specific training, for a total of two (2) hours of continuing education

It is important to note that a licensee who holds a hoisting license with multiple classes must complete only two (2) hours of regulatory and industry standard training. In other words, if a licensee holds a 1C & 2A license, they must complete a total of six (6) hours:

  •  two (2) hours of regulatory and industry standard training, plus
  •  two (2) hours of equipment specific training for the 1C, plus
  •  two (2)hours of equipment specific training for the 2A

At Leisure's Mass. Hoisting License online classes have systems built in to ensure you don't take more than the minimum required regulatory hours, even if you hold multiple grades of license.

Need help calculating how many hours you need to take? Using the image below, check off each license grade you hold, and then total the number of Regulatory (Law) Training and Equipment Training hours you need at the bottom. Or, you can simply enroll in an "@-Leisure" con. ed. course for each license grade you hold, and our system will make sure you take the right number of hours.

Certificate of Completion:

Your con. ed. provider is required to issue a certificate of completion to you after you've successfully completed the program. There is certain information that must be included on this certificate per 520 CMR 6.04, such as your name, address, e-mail address, hoisting license number, date of issuance, and more.

You, the licensee, are required to include a copy of this certificate of completion when you submit your renewal every two years.

License Renewal:

Licenses expire every two years on your birthday, and you are required to complete continuing education as outlined above prior to this expiration date.

If your license is not renewed on or before the expiration date, your license becomes void. If you submit your renewal within one year following your expiration date, you can still renew your license and move it back into "active" status.

If your license is not renewed within one year following your expiration date, it becomes "null and void," which means you are no longer able to renew it. At this point, the only way to re-instate your hoisting license is by re-examination, which means starting from scratch: submitting a new applicaton, waiting for an exam date, and passing the in-person state exam.
