When it comes to installing and maintaining plumbing systems, there is no substitute for the work of a qualified, licensed professional. According to the Massachusetts State Plumbing Code, public health, environmental sanitation, and safety can only be achieved through properly designed, acceptably installed, and adequately maintained plumbing systems.

What Plumbing Fixtures Are Required For Massachusetts Homes?

Comfort and safety are always top of mind when installing plumbing systems in any home. That’s why Massachusetts plumbing code stipulates that each dwelling needs to have at least one of the following fixtures in order to meet the state’s basic prerequisites of sanitation and personal hygiene:

  • Toilet
  • Lavatory(sinkor wash basin in bathroom)
  • Kitchen-style sink
  • Bathtub or shower compartment or unit

Required Laundry Facilities In Single And Multiple Dwellings

A washing machine connection that consists of a piping arrangement including a cold water supply, hot water supply, and a sufficient drain connections need to be installed in any one-family dwelling. In a two-family dwelling, at least one connection can be shared in a common area that’s accessible to all units.

In the case of multiple-unit dwellings, such as an apartment building (non-elderly housing), there should be at least one washing machine connection for every ten dwelling units (or a fraction thereof when there is not a washing machine in the unit.)

Requirements for Plumbing in Elderly Housing

In housing that is restricted to elderly residents, the requirement is to have at least one washing machine connection for every 20 dwelling units or a fraction thereof that do not have a washing machine in the unit. The connection should be located so that each occupant in a dwelling has access to a washing machine that may be affixed to the washing machine connection.

Plumbing fixtures must be constructed of durable, smooth, nonabsorbent, and corrosion resistant material and must be free of concealed fouling surfaces.
