As of December 24, 2021, and according to 248 Mass. Reg 11.04, things are changing for senior plumbers and gasfitters in 2022. The late December announcement put MA plumbers and gas fitters on notice that the age exemption for MA plumber license holders would soon come to an end.
Latest Changes to Continuing Education Requirements
Before the calendar turned to 2022, plumbers and gas fitters over age 65 did not need to renew annually. However, now, if you have reached or are older than age 65, you must complete the Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) Requirements for plumbers, gasfitters, and petroleum gas installers.
If you want to postpone your renewal for as long as possible, you may petition the board until May 1, 2022. As a current licensee having petitioned the board, you will be eligible for an exemption from the continuing education for plumbers requirement beginning the first complete renewal cycle after the licensee turns 65 years old.
After that point, you will become responsible for completing plumbers continuing education courses to obtain Massachusetts license renewal, unless you have another qualifying exception besides one that is age-related. Otherwise, after May 1, 2022, you will join other Massachusetts licensed plumbers in continuing education to renew your licensure. So what do you do once you’ve reached this stage?
