Keeping your MA Construction Supervisor License in good standing requires a little bit of upkeep, and most importantly, a renewal every two years. This calls for a few individual steps that you should complete well in advance of the time your current license expires. The process is not particularly complicated, although it does include some recent changes to the continuing education requirements. Here is what you need to know.

When to Renew Your License

Ideally, you should plan to renew your MA Construction Supervisor License at least a month or two before its expiration (licenses expire on your birthday). The state’s Division of Professional Licensure recommends that you give at least five weeks for them to process your application. Massachusetts gives you a grace period of up to one year after the expiration to renew your license at the same fee. After one year, you must pay an extra $100 to apply for renewal. And if you wait longer than two years, an exam and a new application are required.

The best time to apply may depend on the timing of your continuing education classes. Since you can use courses you took up to two years before expiration, you may want to complete your application before the oldest courses become too old to count.

Items Needed for MA CSL Renewal

Assuming that you have done the work to fulfill your continuing education requirements, submitting your application to renew your license should be reasonably straightforward. These are the things you need to have ready:

  • Proof that you have completed the required continuing education courses
  • Fee of $100 or $200, depending on the expiration date of your current license
  • A completed application, which you can do in person, by mail or online

Once you have submitted your application, all you have to do is wait for notification that it has been approved.

Continuing Education Changes

If you last renewed your MA CSL in 2017, you should know that the rules concerning continuing education have changed. Professionals have to complete six to 12 hours of continuing education every two years. The total depends on the type of license you plan to renew. Until 2018, you had the option to complete it all online.

Now, unless you are renewing a Construction Supervisor Specialty License, you can only get up to six hours of your continuing education online. The rest must be done in a classroom setting.
