Qualifications

•Contacts with the public may be required on an occasional basis

•and one to three years of related experience required

•Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment Operator License Grade 5M

•Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License

•OSHA 10 Certification

•Knowledge: Knowledge of the principles and practices of wastewater treatment plant collection system operation and pumping systems

•Knowledge of the materials and techniques required for the maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment machinery and equipment

•Working knowledge of federal, state, and local water pollution control regulations

•Knowledge of laboratory testing and sampling techniques and procedures

•Abilities: Ability to perform and analyze laboratory tests

•Ability to keep detailed records

•Skills: Skill in the operation of all required tools and equipment

•May be required to be on call for 24 hours or being under prolonged pressure during emergency situations

•PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS

•Work requires moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily, such as, lifting heavy objects, carrying the object(s) and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area

•Must be able to climb ladders and work in confined spaces

•A great deal of physical effort must be exerted at this level

•Duties involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination

•Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes such as plans, technical specifications and regulations

•The ideal candidate must work as a member of a team to operate and maintain the wastewater collection, treatment and discharge system in accordance with the plant NPDES permit and CMOM requirements

•A valid MA Class D driver’s license along with a good driving record is required

•Record keeping, troubleshooting and communication skills are essential

 

Responsibilities

•Must be available for after-hour emergency calls and weekend/holiday duty shifts on a rotating basis

•Technical and administrative work of a responsible nature in the daily operation and maintenance of the wastewater facilities; manual work, and operating equipment on projects; all other related work, as required

•Performs plant operations, including monitoring meters and gauges and logging periodic readings such as clarifier blanket readings and dissolved oxygen readings, hypo chlorite readings, calibrating meters, waste sludge, exercises valves, operating plant pumps and machinery, monitoring and adjusting equipment timers, servicing flow meters and flow charts, operating and servicing automatic samplers, performing process control calculations, based on laboratory test results, keeping records, charts, and logs concerning plant process control and operations, and making necessary operational adjustments to the system and chemical additions, based on laboratory results

•Performs plant maintenance, performs laboratory analysis and maintains plant laboratory, in accordance with regulatory agency standards

•Performs required tests, including pH, TSS, BOD and E-Coli; collects samples from various locations

•Skims primary tanks for grease and scum; skim chlorine contact chamber

•Monitors conditions and operations at pump stations

•Cleans and calibrates meters, as needed

•Performs collection system repair and maintenance including gravity and force mains; lift stations; and appurtenances

•Monitors infiltration and inflow; responds to emergencies

•Performs custodial and grounds keeping duties, as necessary

•Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates

•SUPERVISION RECEIVED

•Under general supervision of the Wastewater Superintendent

•The employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently

•The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult or unusual assignments, including suggested work methods

•The employee refers unusual situations to the supervisor for advice and further instructions

•The work involves numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general instructions that govern the work and requires additional interpretation

•The nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease

•Work may be continually performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions

•In addition, pulling, pushing, standing or walking for the full work day may also be involved

 

Benefits

•Benefits include an $90/day stipend for weekend/holiday on-call duty, annual boot allowance and license stipends, uniforms, and coverage of license renewal and training costs

•Generous time off provisions include paid vacation, 4 paid personal days per year, and 15 paid holidays per year, plus 10 hours of paid sick time are earned each month (15 paid sick days per year) with the ability to bank up to 720 hours

•Salary: From $26.07 per hour
