Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • Position requires two to three years of directly relevant experience in a public works environment
  • Licensing Required
  • Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License, Class B or better
  • Valid Grade 2B Hoist Engineer's License
  • Position requires advanced-level skills using heavy motor equipment, as well as general knowledge equivalent to the completion of high school
  • The incumbent should be capable of continuous walking, standing, climbing and frequent periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical positions; regular and sustained periods of strenuous physical exertion, requiring the ability to lift, carry and position heavy objects utilizing proper body mechanics and techniques; operation of equipment which causes loud noise levels and high vibrations; may require the exercise of caution when operating heavy equipment or handling chemicals or other toxic materials; and utilization of proper sanitary precautions when handling trash, garbage and other potential hazards
  • Though reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions, she or he must be capable of climbing ladders and surmounting off-road obstacles typical of the Town's forested, swampy, rocky terrain; carrying supplies and/or equipment of at least 25 pounds; working in extreme weather in darkness and light alone or while assisting fellow employees; and operating construction and maintenance equipment, telephones, two-way radios or similar items
  • Such activities require that the incumbent at times be capable of walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling while carrying equipment or supplies
  • She or he must be capable of speaking, hearing, seeing, feeling and smelling
  • As the job requires proficiency in operation of mobile equipment and vehicles the incumbent must have good eye-hand coordination plus an ability to reach, grasp and manipulate controls with a sensitivity of touch adequate to control the equipment, faulty operation of which may endanger fellow workers or the public

Responsibilities

  • Skilled manual work which requires both CDL and Hoist Engineer’s licenses to support the repair and maintenance of town roads, drainage systems, snow and ice removal, tree work, parks and grounds maintenance, building maintenance and other town infrastructure; responding to emergencies, and providing for the overall safety and efficiency of work operations; all other related work, as required
  • Works under direct supervision of Public Works Superintendent or DPW Foreman receiving assignments daily, and following departmental rules, regulations and policies; performs operations to complete assigned task or tasks according to a prescribed time schedule; but refers unusual problems to supervisors
  • The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations for the various types of work that may be performed
  • Perform skilled labor and mechanical duties and operate light and heavy motorized and hydraulic equipment at an intermediate level in support of Public Works operations
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair to equipment; perform inspections on
  • Departmental vehicles and equipment; and maintain equipment logs and reports
  • Operate gasoline or diesel equipment including, but not limited to, roller, heavy tractor mowers, front end loader and backhoe
  • Repair and resurface roads; repair culverts; dig and backfill trenches; and set up traffic safety patterns
  • Operate heavy hydraulic and motorized equipment on an intermediate skill level
  • Assist in installing, repairing and maintaining the drainage system pipes and catch basins; and clean storm sewers, catch basins and pipes
  • Perform minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment, such as, but not limited to, adding/changing oil, hydraulic fluid, changing tires, etc
  • Cut and remove severed tree limbs, dead branches and brush
  • Prepare and place concrete at an advanced skill level
  • Set curbing; construct manholes, catch basins, retaining walls and related masonry work; and work with asphalt and bituminous materials surfacing, resurfacing, and patching streets, parking areas, and bridges
  • Provide on-call duties during snow emergencies, operating snow plowing and removal equipment
  • Maintain work area and equipment in safe and operable condition, adhering to all applicable safety and health rules and regulations
  • Provide assistance to contractors as directed; assist other Town departments as required;
  • Provide on-call emergency assistance; and perform other related duties as assigned
  • Employee must respond to emergencies in the event of an urgent situation under
  • direction of DPW Superintendent and/or DPW Foreman in charge based on abilities
  • Performs similar or related work as required, or as the situation dictates

  • Duties require frequent and extended periods of outside work, subject to all weather conditions and extremes
  • She or he may work near moving mechanical equipment in precarious places; be occasionally exposed to wet, snowy, cold, hot or humid conditions
  • At times the incumbent may be exposed to fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, petroleum products, risk of electrical shock and vibration
  • Incumbent has frequent contact with other Town personnel; occasional contact with contractors, residents and the general public; interactions require courtesy and tact
  • Poor judgment and errors by DPW personnel can result in personal injury, monetary loss, and injury to other employees, damage to buildings or equipment, or legal repercussions
