Qualifications

  • Contacts with the public may be required on an occasional basis
  • High School diploma or equivalent and one to three years of experience general construction experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of proper safety precautions to be used to prevent injuries
  • Ability: Ability to operate, maintain, and perform minor repairs on a variety of heavy equipment and machinery
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret specifications and technical drawings
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and work effectively over long shifts and during stressful situations

  • Work requires moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily, such as lifting heavy objects, carrying the object(s) and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area

  • A great deal of physical effort must be exerted at this level
  • Essential functions involve close hand and eye coordination and physical dexterity
  • Manipulation and motor control under conditions which may require extreme accuracy may be critical

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for using and operating a variety of motor vehicles and equipment, power tools and hand tools in support of the Highway Division’s construction and maintenance functions
  • The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed
  • Operates a variety of motor vehicles and equipment including trucks with a rated capacity of more than 26,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight, street sweepers, sidewalk plows and sweepers, asphalt rollers and other similar equipment
  • Operates air compressor and related attachments, concrete mixers, lawn mowers, and other light equipment
  • Performs a CDL circle check; lubricates, adds oil, inflates tires and otherwise services equipment to ensure proper operation; reports any malfunctions to supervisor, and may assist in making minor repairs and maintenance
  • Assist in the maintenance of the town streets and sidewalks
  • Prepares roadways for paving by contractors
  • Performs pothole repair and pavement patching
  • Participates in annual street and sidewalk sweeping program
  • As requested, required to participate in all snow and ice removal operations and other emergencies declared by the department
  • Assist in the maintenance and construction of the storm water collection system
  • Installs and maintains street and traffic signs
  • Assist other divisions as directed
  • May be required to perform duties during off-duty hours including when called from standby status or for emergencies
  • May be required to perform responsibilities of skilled laborer and other subordinate positions
  • Under direct supervision, where clear, detailed and specific instructions govern the work or are explained with each assignment
  • The employee works as instructed and consults with the supervisor as needed on all matters not specifically covered in the guidelines or instructions
  • The nature of work assures that errors are usually detected in succeeding operations
  • Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include time loss caused by back checking by others and slowdowns in the processing of the work
  • Errors are generally confined to a single department, such as billing or accounting errors and/or failure to check a subordinate’s performance
  • The work involves numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general instructions that govern the work and in some cases may require additional interpretation
  • Judgment is needed to locate, select and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation or guideline
  • The work consists of a variety of duties which generally follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines
  • The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a particular situation
  • Relationships are primarily with co-workers incidental to the purpose of the work and involve giving and receiving factual information about the work
  • Ordinary courtesy and tact are required
  • The nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease
  • Work may be continually performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions
  • May be called back to work outside normal working hours to respond to emergency situations
