Qualifications
- Applicants must hold a current Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Applicants must hold a valid Class 2A Hoisting Equipment Operators License issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety
- Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of motor vehicles and heavy power -operated equipment used in excavating, grading, and related construction activities
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of facility grounds maintenance
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures relevant to heavy equipment and vehicles
- Knowledge of the types and uses of snow removal equipment
- Knowledge of the types and uses of hand power tools
- Skill in the operation of a variety of heavy construction equipment and land maintenance equipment
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints, and drawings
- Ability to gather and organize information according to established procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people
- Ability to adapt to varying work situations and meet emergency or changing program or production requirements
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects

Responsibilities
- The selected candidate for this role will be responsible for performing a full range of duties while operating heavy equipment
- The ideal candidate will have experience with operating heavy equipment such as trucks, tractors, riding mowers, front end loaders, backhoe, bulldozers, graders, compactors, snow removal equipment, chippers, and other pieces of mobile equipment for road and grounds maintenance
- Essential Job Duties (these duties are a general summary and not all-inclusive)
- Performs preventative maintenance checks and services on assigned equipment
- Performs minor equipment repairs and mechanical adjustments and refers more significant maintenance problems to supervisor for resolution
- Uses assigned equipment to construct and maintain both improved and unimproved roads and trails
- Uses assigned equipment for facility grounds maintenance to include grounds keeping, snow removal, road maintenance, asphalt patching, excavation for utility service connections, street sweeping etc
- Uses hand operated power equipment and hand tools when heavy equipment is not required
- Transports and handle bulk materials within the facility complex using equipment including but not limited to, trucks, loaders, skid steers, and trailers
- Maintains records and prepares reports such as work vehicle use, logs, accidents repairs and maintenance
- Completes other duties as assigned
- During peacetime, Guard forces are commanded by the Governor through the State Adjutant General
- The Governor can call the Guard into action during local or state-wide emergencies, such as storms, floods, blizzards, and civil disturbances
- In addition, the President of the United States can activate the Massachusetts National Guard to participate in federal missions
- The Massachusetts National Guard's mission is to be trained and ready to provide units that can mobilize for any contingency, at home or abroad
