Qualifications
•A Class B Commercial license with Air Brake endorsement is required
•A 2B hoisting license and a 4G Hydraulic license required
•High school diploma or equivalency; two years of experience in public works construction and maintenance activities; or any equivalent combination of education and experience
•Knowledge: Working knowledge of public works equipment and mechanics
•Working knowledge of construction and maintenance procedures
•Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
•Ability: Ability to carry out oral and written instructions
•Ability to follow proper methods, procedures and safety precautions of a heavy motor equipment operator/laborer
•Skill: Skill in operating all equipment and tools listed above
•Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions for long periods of time
•Ability to drive heavy equipment for long periods of time during all types of weather conditions
•Incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms
•The employee is frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear
Responsibilities
•Hours: 40 hours / week (FULL TIME) M-F 7AM – 330PM
•Assists with highway construction and maintenance projects including building, repairing, and patching streets and sidewalks, cleaning catch basins, repairing guard rails, fencing and signs
•Inspects equipment according to prescribed procedure prior to operation to assure that all controls and safety devices are functioning properly; lubricates and makes minor adjustments to the equipment as necessary; reports major problems to supervisor so that repairs can be made
•Operates heavy equipment of moderate complexity; hauls gravel, dirt, sand, and other materials; loads and unloads materials; operates jackhammer, small roller, and roadside mower; operates vehicles providing roadway snow removal and sanding; plows, sands and salts streets and sidewalks; performs manual labor incidental to the work of operating assigned equipment; services and maintains trucks and equipment (i.e. grease machines)
•May perform laboring duties when not assigned to equipment operation
•Performs manual tasks in connection with the maintenance, care, upkeep, repair, marking and beautification of highways, streets, parking lots, and other town property; such tasks may include cutting grass, applying pavement markings and paint, raking, dumping, spreading, grading, and rolling of asphalt, gravel, stone, and any other material; cleaning, repair and installation of culverts, catch basins, drains, and ditches; patching, paving and repair of highways, streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and other town property; and general cleaning of roads and streets
•Sweeps sidewalks and roads, rakes and mows lawns; pickup and haul debris and rubbish; shovels snow; sands roads and operates trucks and equipment in connection with snow removal activities
•Performs tasks assisting mechanics, carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers, steamfitters, masons and other tradesmen engaged in maintenance, repair, or construction work; such assistance may include adjustments and repair of equipment, sharpening tools, mixing paint, etc
•Assists the Water Department with water main breaks and installation projects as necessary
•Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates
•The incumbent must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
